Serpent Lord – Towards the damned

Serpent Lord was founded in 2016, in Thessaloniki and, having released a demo in 2017, it’s time for their first full-length attempt through Alcyone Music. Recording / mixing / mastering and production in general  was done by Giorgos Stournaras (Mass Infection) at Infected Studios. Quite a lot with the imports though. Let’s cut to the chase.

The album starts with the self-entitled video clip “The Lesser Key“, probably the hit of the album.
Personally, I would have pick  something else for a “hit”, but everyone has different perspective obviously! This piece has pretty nice passes and changes with some prog elements (won’t name it progressive metal though). The only thing that sounded to me a little off was the repeated high-pitched vocals in almost all of the verses. But purely personal opinion!

Then we have the “Ambassador of the New Age“. A concert-friendly piece, ideal for sing-along live situations. Finally, there is a nice riff that reminds me a little of Lamb of God that adds something to the whole song.

Mid-slow tempo song to continue with, and the “Nephilim” are about to make  their appearance. Talking about appearance, some Death touches are hinted in this one. Small though.

Sacrilegium” is the next one. A sing-along chorus too in that. Let me note something here: in most songs of the album there are the prerequisites for sing-along songs, but something goes different (not wrong necessarily) and there is no score in the final result! Otherwise, the basic riff of the track is groovy and everything that needs to get the audience start jumping and the singer start yelling “hey-hey”! More primitive composition than the others, which is reasonable because the song was contained in the first Serpent Lord demo. Of course the difference is not that big, about a year between the release of the demo and that of the album, but enough to be noticed!

Phrygian language lessons next, and bad luck for those who did not appear during the ancient Greek course (?) in High school, because “Evvuio Oitovo Iman” is an appeal written in the Phrygian language, which may sound a bit unusal in our ears but in combination with the choral vocals adds something mystical in the piece. I personally distinguish the heavy / thrash riff in the fast part of the song as well as the part of the solo. I come to two things about this track: first, that I would like more voices in the choral part, and secondly, if not both, at least one guitarist loves Chuck Schuldiner.

Sodom and Gomorrah,” said Sappho Notaras (quote of a famous Greek actress). But I do not see it happening on that instrumental track. I would say it is the weakest moment of the album and more of a filler.

Passing  through the middle of the disc we meet “Serpent, the Lord“. Slow / Mid-tempo track-reference to the Canldemass and Messiah. Nice but I think that’s all with this one.

Let’s continue with the “Blood Offering“, the second composition that’s included in the first Serpent Lord demo as well. I can hear some traditional heavy metal that reminds me of Jag Panzer. At least that’s how it came to my ears as a first impression!

God of Shadows,” is a god that does not last for much, just 2′:05″, pretty similar atmosphere  to Opeth’s “Damnation”. I could say that this could be the best track of the album. It could be, but it’s not. I do not really know what the composer had in mind to say “the song is ready, let’s record it” etc but as a listener I receive that the song is incomplete. The truth is that I wanted more of this song. Some people say “better to want something more and more  than be fed up with it”. Not me though!

Towards the Damned” closing is the very powerful track  “Seed of Devine” that eventually ends up being the best piece of the album. Speed metal chorus and nice play alltogether.

It’s time to talk about the cover of the album, a nice cover inspired by John Martin’s “Sodom and Gomorrah” (1852), edited by John Antoniou. Very nice and fits in the whole subject, though I would prefer an original work.

To sum up, I have to say the following about this piece: I notice a downswing from the middle till the ending, except for the very good last song. I was nor excited neither disappointed. It is a band that is been formed for only a couple of years and is already releasing its first album and, with that as a boost, along with the good live gigs they have been involved in, I expect to hear only good news from them in the future.

First of all, the technical skills sound pretty high given their young age (of course, age does not matter thinking that there are 5-year-old Japanese kids who get us all down, but you get the point). Very good guitarwork, very good drumming and also very good bass without unnecessary overplaying. My only objection is to the vocals and the super frequent use of very high notes. Clearly personal taste. Okay, I have another objection: some of the compositions seemed too exaggerated “we play well and we know it, so add this riff and then another” etc.    Therefore, combined with the short duration of the songs (none of them exceeds 5 minutes), they are very concentrated in riffology etc. Reasonably, because, as we have said, due to young age, the “maturity” of the compositions is not yet achieved! I want to emphasize the “…”  ’cause I don’t want to be characterized as a snob towards the kids and “not support the new generation” blah blah blah.

In general, the band moves in the context of heavy metal and lyrics in an occult subject, which gives a darker tone to the whole shape and brings them a little closer to the doom genre (more as a concept and not as a performance). Influences from Messiah / Candlemass / Mercyful Fate (King Diamnond) are more than obvious.

Έπειτα έχουμε το “Ambassador of the New Age“.

Το “Towards the Damned” κλείνει με το πολύ δυνατό “Seed of Devine” που εν τέλει καταλήγω στο ότι είναι το καλύτερο κομμάτι τού δίσκου.
