The Rockin’ Dead – “Here Comes The Darkness” (EN & GR text)

The “Rockin’ Dead” is a 6-member band from Athens, Greece. Their music is something between rock / alternative, with some rock n roll elements, if I may say. “Here Comes the Darkness” is their first album, released in 2016 (by Rising Star label), and shortly before 2018 ends, I decided to write a couple of thoughts about it.

With this review (just a reminder that I’m not an expert to write what’s right and what’s not, it’s only my opinion), I’m given the opportunity to note this: generally, I do not intend to write just for recently released discs. Music has no expiration date, and if a band has bothered to send us their album to give it an ear, of course we will do so. Plus, there are so many albums that have been released by underground Greek (or not) bands that I liked and I consider to be worthwhile, that their release date will not discourage me from bringing them to the frontline of Headbangers.gr

So! The general feeling that the album left me with, is that “The Rockin’ Dead” had a clear vision of how the album should sound as a whole, both in the style of the music composing, and in the melodic lines of the vocals. I think it was a good move to put more emphasis on the groove and use simpler structures instead of using more complex riffs and melodies. What “The Rockin’ Dead” do, they do it really good, no matter if it seems to me somewhat “old” as a music genre and somewhat like a more “easy going” way. I’m sure that seeing them perform live, will be very interesting and they would make a very good party band. The female vocals (Anna) and the guitars (Malahias brothers) were the biggest surprise of “Here Comes the Darkness“. Also the production of the album is really clear, with all the instruments having their own place in the mix. It’s just like what I would like to listen from a band of that music genre.

My favorite songs from “Here Comes the Darkness” were those that did not remind me of any other song – like “Burn & Fade“, “She’s Kicks & Rocks” and “Here Comes the Darkness“. You can find them in their YouTube channel, among other videos of the band. In the rest of the album, some of their influences are pretty obvious, considering that I even thought of certain songs like “She’s got the look” and “I am Cannibal“, and a little something from HIM. Of course, this is not something that should discourage someone from checking them out. The way they play is really good and inspired, especially if you are into late 00’s music.

Here Comes The Darkness” is a must-have album to hear on a road trip, especially if it’s summer. Give them a listen, you’ll find their music familiar and you’ll probably enjoy how smoothly their set list progresses from “Victory or Death” to “Burn & Fade“. And if you have the chance, do attend one of their gigs. You will definitely have a great, great time.

Το “Here Comes the Darkness” είναι ο πρώτος δίσκος που κυκλοφόρησαν το 2016 (Rising Star label), και λίγο πριν εκπνεύσει το 2018, αποφάσισα να γράψω μια – δυο σκέψεις για τον δίσκο τους.

Ευχαριστήθηκα περισσότερο τα κομμάτια τους που δε μου θύμισαν κάτι, όπως τα “Burn & Fade”, “She Kicks & Rocks” και “Here Comes the Darkness“. Μέσα στον υπόλοιπο δίσκο, αρκετές φορές μου βγήκε κάτι από “She’s got the look“, “I am Cannibal“, και κάτιτι από HIM.
