Terra Incωgnita released their first album, “Barren Land,” in 2011. Six years later, in November 2017, they returned with the “Fragments of a Ruined Mind,” a concept album inspired by Strahd von Zarovich’s, a character from the role playing game “Ravenloft“.

The album was released by Symmetric Records, a company of Bob Katsionis, who also did the production / mixing of the album. Almost a year later, I put my opinion on this album in a few rows – this is a review for me, I am by no means a critic.

So we start with the introduction to the album “Strahd’s Revenge“, a two-minute epic metal track that fits perfectly with the concept of the album. With “My Emptiness“, we go straight to the main theme: the track starts with authentic, classic, pure and familiar heavy metal! And even if there are several epic elements inside the tracks, this does not make “Fragments of a Ruined Mind” an epic metal album. On the contrary, the most basic gengres of their music are power metal, heavy metal and several influences from Iced Earth, Pantera (listen to “Sign with Blood” and you will see), with the vocals being a bit more power-ish than the music. No complex compositions, they’re just keeping it simple.

Then there is “In the Mist“. This and “The Midnight Lies” are the most commercial songs of the album. “In the Mist“, probably because it reminded me of The Tea Party, it’s a song that can easily be heard and appreciated from an audience that might not like in general that kind of metal music. “The Midnight Lies” on the other hand, has undoubtedly the most catchy chorus of the album!

“Day Without Loss” leaves no questions about Billy Vass’s voice. I really enjoyed listening that song, it’s a really beautiful piece, although I kinda think that it does not fit perfectly into the coherence of the album. Especially as a bridge from “The Word” to “Conqueror“.

In “Covenant“, while the music immediately sparked my interest, the vocals besides the chorus did not hold it. In contrast to the melodious line of the voice in the chorus that I liked it a lot, and the very strong closing of the song.

The production of the album is really good, everything sounds like I would like for such an album. Everything has it’s place in the mix, the drums sound clear and heavy, the bass is not buried back in the background, and the vocals are in the middle of the music – neither in front of it, nor behind it. Such a crystal clear production, without all that compressed and absent cymbals, is always appreciated.

My favorites on the album were the guitar solo in the “Life Begins Again” at 4:00, as did the end of this track. Also, the first minute of “My Ruined Mind“. Especially the chebalo, what a nice addition!

Review in greek language.

Οι Terra Incωgnita έβγαλαν τον πρώτο δίσκο τους, “Barren Land” το 2011. Έξι χρόνια μετά, το Νοέμβρη του 2017, επέστρεψαν ανανεωμένοι με το “Fragments of a Ruined Mind“, έναν concept δίσκο, εμπνευσμένο από τον χαρακτήρα Strahd Von Zarovich του role playing game “Ravenloft“. Η κυκλοφορία του δίσκου έγινε από την Symmetric Records, εταιρία του Bob Katsionis, ο οποίος έκανε και παραγωγή / μίξη στον δίσκο. Σχεδόν έναν χρόνο αργότερα, βάζω σε κάμποσες σειρές τη γνώμη μου για το δίσκο αυτό – το κείμενο αυτό είναι για μένα ένα review, σε καμία περίπτωση δεν είναι “κριτική”.

Ξεκινάμε λοιπόν με την εισαγωγή στον δίσκο που γίνεται με το κομμάτι “Strahd’s Revenge“, ένα δίλεπτο epic metal ατμόσφαιρας που ταιριάζει απόλυτα με το θέμα του δίσκου. Με το “My Emptiness“, περνάμε κατευθείαν στο κυρίως θέμα: το κομμάτι ξεκινάει με αυθεντικό, κλασικό, καθαρό και οικείο heavy metal! Και στη συνέχεια του δίσκου, τα epic στοιχεία δε λείπουν, αλλά αυτό δεν τον κάνει σε καμία περίπτωση έναν epic metal δίσκο. Τουναντίον, τα πιο βασικά είδη που κινείται η μουσική τους είναι το power, heavy και αρκετές επιρροές από Iced Earth, Pantera (άκου “Sign with Blood” και θα με θυμηθείς), με τα φωνητικά να power-ίζουν λίγο παραπάνω. Χωρίς πολύπλοκα σημεία και χωρίς φανφαρολογίες.

Έπειτα σειρά έχει το “In the Mist“. Αυτό και το “The Midnight Lies” είναι πιστεύω τα πιο *εμπορικά* κομμάτια του δίσκου. Το “In the Mist” ίσως επειδή μου θύμισε κάτι από τους The Tea Party, το φαντάζομαι πολύ εύκολα να κερδίζει κοινό που ίσως να μην ακούει το είδος που παίζουν οι Terra Incωgnita. Το “Midnight Lies” απ’ την άλλη, έχει το πιο catchy ρεφρέν του δίσκου, ξεκάθαρα!

Το “Day Without Loss” δεν αφήνει καμία απορία για τη φωνή του Billy Vass. Μου αρέσει που το άκουσα, είναι ένα όντως όμορφο κομμάτι, κι ας μην μου ταίριαξε στη συνοχή του δίσκου. Ειδικά για μετάβαση από το “The Word” στο “Conqueror“.

Στο “Covenant“, ενώ η μουσική κέντρισε αμέσως το ενδιαφέρον μου, τα φωνητικά εκτός του ρεφρέν δεν με κράτησαν. Σε μεγάλη αντίθεση με τη μελωδική γραμμή της φωνής στα ρεφρέν που μου άρεσε αρκετά, και το πολύ δυνατό κλείσιμο του κομματιού.

Τη παραγωγή του δίσκου τη βρήκα πολύ καλή, τα πάντα μου ακούγονται όπως θα τα ήθελα για ένα τέτοιο δίσκο. Έχουν όλα το χώρο τους στη μίξη, τα τύμπανα ακούγονται καθαρά και βαρβάτα, το μπάσο δεν είναι θαμμένο κάπου πίσω στο παρασκήνιο και τα φωνητικά είναι ανάμεσα στη μουσική – ούτε πιο πίσω, ούτε τέρμα μπροστά. Εκτίμησα πολύ το πόσο άνετα μπορούσα να διακρίνω ό,τι ήθελα να προσέξω περισσότερο, και το πόσο τα πάντα παίζουν αρμονικά το ρόλο τους για να βγει το αποτέλεσμα που φτάνει στα αυτιά μας.

Αγαπημένα μου σημεία στον δίσκο ήταν το σόλο της κιθάρας κοντά στο 04:00 του “Life Begins Again” όπως και το τέλος του κομματιού αυτού, και το πρώτο λεπτό του “My Ruined Mind“. Ειδικά το τσέμπαλο, τι ωραία προσθήκη!
